California legislators, staffers and lobbyists have relied on the daily file forever. State capitol pros thumb through the official half-inch bound stack of pages to learn when hearings are scheduled and what bills are on deck. Previously, if you needed this information on the go, print was your only option — until now, with the launch of the Daily File Mobile App created by Folsom-based startup Apptology.

“[The daily file] is a thick magazine that goes out on a daily basis, which in my mind you could do the same thing for a fraction of the price and have something that is actually useful for people because it would be available on their phones and you would not have to kill so many trees,” said Rich Foreman, the app’s creator and CEO of Apptology.

Foreman said he got the idea after visiting the capitol a couple of times after his company was nominated by Assemblymember Richard Pan as small business of the year. He floated the idea around the building but didn’t get much interest, so he decided to move forward as an independent venture with the hope of sustaining the app through future advertising revenue.

“We actually came out with a product that’s more of an app, so you can have access to the daily file, but it has the complete roster, you can have video feeds…and you can take notes, so it becomes much more interactive,” said Foreman.

Joe Camicia, a veteran former legislative staffer who now runs a digital marketing and public affairs firm, said there is a growing demand for faster technology in government and more transparency in the legislative process. For these reasons, he consulted with Foreman on the project with the hope that it will take off in the state capitol community.

Apptology accepted in Velocity Venture Capital's Business Accelerator Program

Velocity Venture Capital announced it has accepted 10 promising technology startups into the its Entrepreneurs Showcase, the third phase of its Business Accelerator program.

The accelerator program started in October and meets every week. It has entrepreneurs work through eight modules on topics from growth to financing with successful executives and investors.

“The sessions are a fire hose of information for these entrepreneurs that provide experiential learning -- and a dramatic expansion of their professional networks,” Jack Crawford, general partner at Velocity Venture Capital, said in a news release. “The process of immediately translating the real world case studies to their own business forces the intellectual agility that every entrepreneur must have to succeed.”

The showcase will be unveiled Dec. 3 with a “Demo Day” at Velocity’s Entrepreneurs campus in Folsom where the 10 companies will present their business to a room full of potential investors, partners and customers.

The selected companies selected this year are:

• 19 Pencils: Provides services to help elementary teachers use web resources

• Archer: A software company providing intuitive gesture Smart TV operating system to device companies

Parents begin using Childhood Medical Journal by entering the name, sex, and birthdate of the child in the Personal Information window. Each child can be assigned one of 256 different colors, and all their records are automatically color-coded. For archival purposes, parents can fill in the following text fields: time of birth, weight, length, head circumference, hair color, Apgar scores, place of birth, delivery doctor, complications (if any), mother's blood type, father's blood type, baby's blood type, home address at time of birth, and where birth was registered.

Separate sub-categories let parents compile all their Emergency Contacts, including relations and contact numbers, doctors, hospitals, dentists, emergency rooms, etc. The Identification Marks window lets caregivers indicate any identifying marks on anterior and posterior infant outlines, including date and size of mark. Lastly, the Hospital Notes sub-category allows parents to record special instructions when going home from the hospital.

Let me introduce an app that is specifically designed to serve in this area.

In My Own World, an iPhone app comes with an inspiring tale for Autism children, to let them escape into their own world. After launching it, users can find two sections – Read myself and Read to me. The first option launches a book with images and related text that can be read by kids.

The other section of the In My Own World is a video that has all the pages of the ebook and a background voice to read them for the kids. The idea behind the app is letting the kids read or hear the text to visualize and explore their own world.

The concept is good and the design deserves the praise it gets!

In My Own World is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad and it requires iOS 4.2 or later. As it has a video, this app is a bit bulky (131MB). In My Own World can impress any child and I think this effort needs to be appreciated as this app comes at free of cost. It really deserves a try.

With each additional Incident recorded in its database, the app can provide increasingly accurate Summary information, which will help the user determine what to avoid, which treatments are best, and the preventive measures, if any, that work. Also in the Summary are: Average Duration, Common First Symptoms, Common Triggers, Average Frequency, and Average Severity.

The app includes a library of preventive measures, and users can track the frequency and start date of each measure they adopt. This information is included in the analysis presented in the Summary.

SACRAMENTO, CA - A Folsom man is bringing ideas to life in the form of mobile apps.

Apptology is one of 450 technology companies in the area that is making a difference through innovation

For Rich Foreman, making apps is more than just business.

"I started out making apps for my daughter actually," Foreman explained.

It started as a hobby in 2009 creating apps for his daughter.

"The apps we made, she learned her ABCs and learned to count actually," Foreman said.

At the time, Foreman worked as a software engineer for WebEx in Rancho Cordova, which was eventually acquired by Cisco. Then, Foreman found himself a casualty of the economy.

"I don't think I would have been an entrepreneur if I didn't get laid off, but sometimes necessity is the mother of invention," Foreman said.

He likes Sacramento and didn't want to move to the Bay Area for another tech job. Foreman looked around and saw how much smart phones were changing how people communicate and how businesses could use apps as a marketing tool. So, he took a big chance.

"Basically, this whole thing was funded through my 401K plan," Foreman said.

He formed Apptology with one other person. Three years later, the Sacramento area based tech start up has grown to about 50 employees with clients worldwide.

So far, Foreman and his team have created more than 200 apps. There's one that interprets your dreams, write a song and help you if you're in the market to buy a home.

"This is a hot space," Foreman said. "Every time I go to the airport or walk through a restaurant, I feel validated I am doing the right thing."

And if this is any validation, Apptology is growing 30 percento to 40 percent every year. He's making apps that he knows will one day make their way into his daughter's hands again.

Get Clued In, LLC, mobile game publisher announces today the availability of Clued InTM word puzzle for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad – a must have game for crossword puzzle fanatics. Clued InTM is an acrostic puzzle in which players reveal the puzzle’s principal clue (in the grid at the top of the game screen) by solving a series of individual crossword style clues (at the bottom of the game screen). The initial letters of those individual answers also spell out a hint to the puzzle’s final answer. Clued InTM is easy to learn and will become a favorite pastime for young and young at heart players. The Clued InTM app contains 25 engaging puzzles with each puzzle taking between 15-20 minutes to complete.
