Cycle of Rice Application

Explore rice farming on the beautiful island of Bali, and learn about the concept of "environmental sustainability" in real life. Follow the lives of 2 children as they take you through the cycle of growing rice, and through the culture of their daily lives. Rich photographs, and clear text, along with the author Jan Reynolds' voice, take you on a journey from the high volcanoes through the terraced rice fields, all the way out to sea. We learn how Balinese people share the water as it flows throughout the island, in man made streams, rivers, tunnels and aqueducts. This ancient process of sharing water, and sustainable rice farming, has been ongoing for over 1000 years, without detriment to the environment. Children learn how this form of farming without chemical fertilizers and pesticides, can work, and is the best way to grow our food.

REVIEWS:

"This is an amazing story--one that helps us see more than the story of Bali and rice but also the importance of community, the ways in which we are clearly a global society and the ways in which new technologies do not always make things better. There is a lot to learn and a lot to think about. Whether it is a topic that is new to you or one that you are familiar with, this is a great read. A great book and a great message for everyone." -A Year of Reading

"Illustrated with beautiful photographs throughout, Cycle of Rice Cycle of Life highly recommended as a glimpse into the positive traditions of Balinese agriculture, and the universal message of responsible stewardship." -Midwest Book Review

"Now that green is moving to the top of the curriculum, Reynolds work is an excellent resource for parents trying to communicate to their children what sustainability is, and for teachers who need help with developing lesson plans." -Our Time Press

"The breathtaking photos of “Cycle of Rice’’ are stunning golds and greens. They give young readers a glimpse into the details and mechanics of sustainable farming, but more richly, into the lives of people who have learned to live in balance with nature and with each other." -Boston Globe
